The first of its kind, Second Sitters radical touring exhibition, Upholstery: Evolution to Revolution is a fascinating journey through the history of upholstery in the UK, featuring works that challenge the traditional, preconceived role of the upholsterer, exploring the craft in contemporary, unusual and unexpected ways.

The show maps the changes and developments within the craft since it was formalised as a ‘trade’ almost 700 years ago and includes techniques, materials and upholsterers stories. Contemporary works are multidisciplinary; from furniture and photography to film, tackling activism, social commentary, materiality and throwaway culture.

Alongside the main exhibition Second Sitters has worked closely with venue partners to create engaging, lively, informative and educational events.

The touring exhibition has been designed with flexibility in mind and can be adapted for multiple types of venue.

Second Sitters can work with you to curate a tailor made public engagement programme to work with your location and visitor demographic.
